Polis Partners partnered with yamagigu to undertake a detailed market sizing and cost-benefit analysis for an accreditation of Indigenous agricultural products. This work supported the National Farmers' Federation and Commonwealth Government in its consideration of ways to enable First Nations traditional knowledge and practices to be acknowledged and protected in the agricultural product sector.
The Indigenous agricultural product market is an important market for Australia and designing policy settings to support ongoing and sustainable growth, and enable First Nations communities to benefit from, and protect, their rich and deep culture is critical.
After identifying the types of products which would fall within the Indigenous agricultural product scheme, as well as the form of Indigenous ownership of the entities producing the products, Polis Partners estimated that the market for accredited Indigenous-owned and produced agricultural products is a small, but growing component of the broader Australian sector.
Importantly, this market has the potential to deliver disproportionately large benefits for the First Nations economy, employment and communities. These benefits were quantified in the cost-benefit analysis of alternative scheme design and implementation options.
