The Challenge

Sydney lacks a permanent outdoor events and concert venue comparable to those of a global city including in Melbourne (Myer Music Bowl) and Brisbane (River Stage). The temporary stage structure currently used in the Domain results in high operational costs, management challenges, and hinders the number of events that can be held each year. The uncertainty around operations also leads to numerous event cancellations and discourages organisers from planning large concerts. Additionally, the installation and dismantling process disrupts recreational activities in the Domain, inconveniencing users and the broader community.

The Action

To respond to these challenges, a new permanent Soundshell in the Domain has been proposed. Polis Partners was responsible for undertaking both the Strategic Business Case (SBC) and the Final Business Case (FBC). As part of the business case process for the permanent Soundshell, a comprehensive options analysis was undertaken, exploring potential sites around Sydney and within the Domain.

The solution was designed to integrate seamlessly with other developments, such as the Macquarie Street East Precinct, while also managing heritage concerns. The design created was carefully crafted to harmonise with the native environment, and to minimise the impact of noise and on available greenspace.

The Results

The project culminated in the completion of a strategic business case that was advanced to the final business case stage. From there a fit-for-purpose FBC was developed, ready for government approvals, and is currently in draft pending final approvals.

The Soundshell FBC offers a solution for enhancing Sydney’s event offering, making the city more globally competitive when it comes to live outdoor entertainment. It also aligns with NSW's strategic vision to enhance Sydney’s tourism and nighttime economy.
